Description:
I saw this
type of photo in a recent practical photographer. I had a roll of unused
Scala knocking about since the intro to B&W module so I decided
to use it here. I used a macro lens to get in really close making sure
that I didn't block the studio flash. The whole roll was shot in about
five minutes. I hand held each shot as I wasn't particularly concerned
with clarity in all shots. I used a range of depths of field, by moving
in and out. Some frames I focussed at the far end of the image and some
at the front. The only two parts of the face I considered that I had
to have razor sharp were the right eye and the lips.
The composition
was carefully cut up and placed on a light box. The images were taken
so that I covered the whole face in a 4x4 frame grid. However, on placing
the images in position I noticed that his face seemed to be too wide
to be natuaral. I hadn't taken account of the film margin space. I rectified
this by inserting an extra row of four images at about the forehead
level. This resulted in the creation of duplicate body-parts but it
doesn't matter, I feel, as it adds to the abstract nature of the image.
The composition was then re-photographed on the lightbox with 35mm FP4+
- several shots were taken to bracket the exposure.
